Hace más de 15 meses, se informó de que las balsas de residuos de la mina Kearl de Imperial Oil Ltd. habían vertido más de 5,3 millones de litros de petróleo tóxico en la cuenca del Athabasca. Imperial, junto con el Organismo Regulador de la Energía de Alberta (AER), no informó a las comunidades indígenas afectadas durante más de 9 meses después de que se descubriera la fuga.
